Human-driven genetic differentiation in a managed red deer population

چکیده

Abstract Nineteen red deer areas in a densely populated region with huge network of fenced motorways and the division into administrative management units (AMUs) restricted ecological connectivity were investigated. In season 2018/2019, total 1291 samples (on average 68 per area) collected genotyped using 16 microsatellite markers. The results show clear genetic differentiation between most AMUs. Fourteen AMUs may be combined four regions considerable internal exchange. Five largely isolated or showed only limited gene flow neighbouring areas. Ten 19 had an effective population size below 100. Effective sizes greater than 500–1000, required to maintain evolutionary potential long-term adaptation potential, not achieved by any studied AMUs, even when appreciable exchange aggregated. Substantial can associated presence landscape barriers hindering flow, but also maintenance ‘red deer–free’ Efforts sustainably preserve diversity entire should therefore focus on measures ensuring connectivity. Opportunities for this goal arise from establishment game bridges over protection young male stags migrating through statutory

StudyCapture myopathy in red deer and wild goat

This syndrome is a shock-like hyper metabolic myopathy triggered in susceptible animals by stress. Capture myopathy (C.M.) is a commonly occurring condition in mammals following trapping and transportation. In this case 12 to 24 hours after transportation of red deer (Cevus elaphus) and wild goats (Capra ibex) clinical signs such as: muscular tremor, ataxia, recumbency, hyperthermia, tachyca...

Population dynamics of a natural red deer population over 200 years detected via substantial changes of genetic variation

Most large mammals have constantly been exposed to anthropogenic influence over decades or even centuries. Because of their long generation times and lack of sampling material, inferences of past population genetic dynamics, including anthropogenic impacts, have only relied on the analysis of the structure of extant populations. Here, we investigate for the first time the change in the genetic ...

A Multivariate Analysis of Genetic Constraints to Life History Evolution in a Wild Population of Red Deer

Evolutionary theory predicts that genetic constraints should be widespread, but empirical support for their existence is surprisingly rare. Commonly applied univariate and bivariate approaches to detecting genetic constraints can underestimate their prevalence, with important aspects potentially tractable only within a multivariate framework. However, multivariate genetic analyses of data from ...

Testing for genetic trade-offs between early- and late-life reproduction in a wild red deer population

The antagonistic pleiotropy (AP) theory of ageing predicts genetically based trade-offs between investment in reproduction in early life and survival and performance in later life. Laboratory-based research has shown that such genetic trade-offs exist, but little is currently known about their prevalence in natural populations. We used random regression 'animal model' techniques to test the gen...
